What a belt loop folder does.
A belt loop folder forms a continuous strip of loop material, folding its edges in to a finished width so a belt loop attaching machine can cut and sew loops to a garment at a set length. It feeds the small, uniform loops on a waistband, where consistency across every loop on every garment is what makes a finished waistband look right.
Belt loop folders are sized to the finished loop width and the fabric, and they form the loop material continuously so a downstream machine can index and cut it to length. The finished width has to be exact and constant because a run of loops of slightly different widths on one waistband is an obvious defect.
Belt loop work feeds the waistband operation, so the folder is chosen for the loop width the garment calls for. Choosing one means matching the finished loop width and the fabric weight to the folder, and matching the folder to the belt loop machine that cuts and attaches the formed loop.
